Conclusion.

This blog was a good addition to this course. I actually enjoyed doing these journals and it made me want to join a blogging website called Tumblr. I enjoyed answering the questions that related to my life and it was kind of a place for me to speak out my feelings and vent out on certain issues. I feel that i addressed the objectives of each entry well. I put a lot of thought into this blog and I'm glad that this blog was part of the course.

Apprehensions on Oral Presentation

I don't really have any big apprehensions about my oral presentation. I'm just nervous about forgetting about what to say or repeating and slurring my words. I'm also worried about whether or not the presentation will be enjoyable to the audience. I don't really have any ways on getting over my fear of public speaking. I usually just try not to think about it and pretend that no one is there. I wing the presentation and i manage to do well. I also just look at the teacher most of the time when I'm doing my oral presentation and try to make a bit of eye contact with the audience.

Presentations

I don't really feel differently about public speaking. I get nervous everytime I have to do one but it is what it is. Usually I just wing it and I seem to do fine. It would be nice to take lessons on public speaking. I would like to become better at it and it's a good thing to be good at. Out of all the presentations I would have to say that the student who did the diet comparisons was the most enjoyable. He spoke very well and keep me interested throughout the whole presentation.

Classifying books

My system for classifying books in a book store would go a little something like this. The section would be titled "Words" instead of attention span and the subsections would be, none, too little, a good amount, too much, and don't even bother. The "none" section would include picture books, specifically art books and things for artists. "Too little" would most likely be the kids section which would include short stories and all other short books that kids like to read. The "Good amount" section would basically be my kind of section and it would include a lot of books that are less than 400 -500  pages like A Series of Unfortunate events, or Great Gatsby, or Catcher in the Rye. The "Too much" would include the Harry 'Potter series, Lord of the Rings, and those Narnia Books. I'm not really into that whole mythical thing. "Don't even bother," would include all those extremely long books that no one would ever be able to get through. I read through some of War and Peace but it was just too long for me. I didn't have the patience to finish a 1000 something page book.

The Tipping Point

The Tipping Point so far has been a so-so book. The first 50 pages or so were really interesting and the author grabbed on to my attention. It was interesting reading about things that tipped and things that are still here today and how it happened. After about page 50, i started to drift off into space. I mean, the book is interesting but the author just uses to many examples. The book starts to drag on and you kind of can't wait until it's over. I also think the book could be a little shorter. The author uses to many unnecessary examples and the book should be shorter than what it really is. I understood what the book was trying to say in the first few chapters and reading the rest of it is just getting redundant I think.

My Second Multi-Draft

I thought I did somewhat well on my first multi-draft. I also thought that I was gonna get a bad grade on it but i actually did pretty will on it. Reading the comments on my first multi draft, I realized that I have to work on my transitions. Reading the essay over, i noticed that it didn't flow to well towards the end. I also need to be a bit more specific and build up my argument a bit better. I also realized that i make the essay drag on and it starts to go off topic. Basically in my second multi draft, I need to proofread, work on my transitions, and make sure i stay on topic and build up my argument better.

Sticky Advertising

In the Tipping Point, sticky advertising is described as alliteration, reptition, and most importantly something striking and something that catches the attention of the audience and gets them involved. One of the examples in the Tipping Point uses the slogan from Winston cigarretes, "Winston tastes good like a cigarette should." Gladwell states that to this day, if you say Winston tastes good, most americans can finish the sentence by saying like a cigarette shold. He claims that this is a prime example of sticky advertising. I think a good example of a sticky ad would be something provacative that will make you remember the commercial or the ad. I think that recent ad featuring Serena Williams advertising a video game is very sticky. It's extremely provacative and it made me remember about what she was advertising after thinking about the commercial. The shamwow commercials are also very sticky since they use repition throughout.

Bias

Bias in The Tipping Point was addressed by citing a study done on a presidential election and it involved news anchors from ABC, CBS, and NBC. Peter Jennings from ABC, showed bias in facial expressions. When he talked about a particular presidential candidate he would smile which is a clear showing of bias and he would also vertically shake his head which shows another means of bias. In a news segment by channel 6 ABC, the news anchor shows bias at the beginning of the segment. The news segment was about solar power and you can see the anchor showing somewhat of a smile in agreement of the solar power. He was also shaking his head in many different directions and his tone of voice also seemed very positive.

Fashion

I myself have a slight obsession over fashion. I go on fashion, clothing, and sneaker websites daily and i tend to online window shop constantly. I'm not really sure how i fit into fashion trends. I wouldn't describe myself as a trendsetter and i wouldn't describe myself as following everyone else. I also feel that anyone that says they are not following a fashion trend is false. Whatever someone has worn or wears has probably been a trend in the past or present. Like girls and their owls. Girls are obsessed with owls at the moment for some reason.  I guess you could say I'm kind of in the middle? I like to look at current fashion trends but not try and follow them. I like to look good and make it my own. I'm into street wear underground brands that no one really knows about here in south jersey but I'm all for that hipster look that the store Urban Outfitter has. I try to meet in the middle and make my style my own and express myself through what i wear.

My Stockton Activities

Since my freshman year at Stockton, I have yet to join any activities on campus. My fall semester, I did not join any clubs or do any activities because I was extremely busy. I had 5 classes, 2 labs, and I had no time in my schedule to fit in clubs or activities. Right now, during my spring semester, I haven't joined any clubs or activities for the same reason as my fall semester. I have 2 labs, 4 classes, and again, i don't have any time in my schedule. I hope to be able to engage in activities on campus in the near future.

My Conference

I'm not really sure what to say about how my first multi-draft conference went. I basically talked about how my paper was going and how it was set up and i guess she liked it? She didn't really say anything else about it so i figured that i was on the right track. I think it was hard for her give me a proper conference since i didn't have a physical copy of my multi-draft. I'll remember to do that sometime. I don't really know what else to say. I guess my conference went all right? If i had a physical copy of my draft I'm sure that my conference would have went very well.

President's 2012 Budget Reveals Conflicted Priorities on Immigration

President's 2012 Budget on Immigration

Reading this blog entry made me realize that our government isn't really taking immigration seriously in regards to making it better for immigrants. The administration is giving much money to custody operations, border fencing, programs to identify immigrants in jail but the government is not giving much to programs that could reshape the immigration system. I feel that our government is helping the negative side of immigration but not the positive side of it. I don't understand why our government does these kinds of things.

Border Patrol

I thought that this article was a very good read. It made me think about immigration in our society today and what's being done to control it. I didn't really realize the extremities of what is being done until reading this article. Silko's predicament is a pretty unreasonable one. The border patrolmen took it a bit too far with the whole situation. Their treatment was unfair and unjust. The border patrolmen take their authority a bit too far and it's scary to think that they could just kill you or attack you in an instant, like in the case of Michael Elmer that Silko mentioned. A lot of the things border patrolmen have done are horrible and they seem to be extremely racist. Although this was being done to help problems with border crossing and immigration, the border patrolmen took it too far. I also agree with what Silko had to say about how there is no use and borders haven't worked. At this point in time, I don't think borders will work. Sure border patrolmen could help with immigration problem but I feel that they are too vicious to deal with and I don't think a 10 foot high steel wall will help anything either. Immigrants will always find a way to get across.

Mom: A Nurse

My mom is a nurse who works at the Atlantic City Medical Center in Atlantic City, New Jersey. To be more precise, she is an operating room nurse, which i think is the most difficult out of all the jobs that nurses are eligible to have. My mom helps doctors with operations and she is one of the head leaders to operate the new DaVinci surgery system. I admire my mom for what she does and she is a very hard worker. In regards to whether or not a career becomes a part of a persons identity or not, I feel that it depends on the amount of time you have had that career. It also depends on the person and whether they like their job or not. Overall i feel that it does become a part of a person's identity. It's your job and people will associate you with your career. With my mom I feel that her occupation somewhat has become part of her identity. She's been a nurse since the 1980's and she's worked very hard to be where she is at right now.  Many people know that she is a nurse and people assume she's a nurse because she is Filipino. She uses a lot of her skills to heal our family and she uses things from her career in her everyday life.

T.V Series: The Office

The office, one of many great T.V shows. The whole show revolves around people working in an office and chronicles the lives of the works from episode to episode. The show is very comedic and the show has one numerous awards. Personally, I love the show and i watch it every time it is on. It's funny and it always gives me a good laugh. The characters are hilarious and the antics the cast members get into are funny as well. I don't recall any immigrant workers in the show and i'm not really sure why. The first thing that came to my mind while thinking about this entry was maybe there aren't any immigrant workers because they're not fit to work in an office. I don't mean to sound harsh but that is the only reason i could think of. There maybe no need for immigrant workers on the show? It's kind of a tough question to answer without sounding harsh.

Stockton Colelge: Using my time wisely

My use of time during the first two weeks of this semester have been very efficient. I changed my habits from my first semester drastically in regards to studying and school work. I've spent more time on my school work and I'm on top of my school work in all my classes. Since i have a long break in between one of my classes i use that time to eat lunch quickly and finish my work. I feel like I've become a work/school obsessed during this semester though. I haven't spent as much time with my family and friends as i would like too. During my first semester it was like this, family and friends first before school. This semester, i decided that school would come first. I feel like i have managed my time efficiently in the school area but i think that my personal life, which i stated in last entry, needs a bit of improvement.

Have I learned anything new about myself?

Recently, in terms of my college life, I have learned a lot about myself. I have learned that I need to manage my time more wisely and I need to start waking up earlier and eat breakfast since i always get hungry throughout the day. I have also learned that i have to multitask a bit better, study more, and I need to always be ahead of my homework so i don't get behind. In terms of my personal life, I've learned a few things about myself. I realized during the middle of 2010 and the beginning of 2011 that i have to be more family orientated. I haven't been as close to my family as i was before because i have been so busy with many things. The start of the new year made me learn that i need to hone my skills of music and sports. I can't just forget about tennis and piano, both these things have made up almost all of my life. I feel that the my second semester of college is going more smoothly than the first. My personal life in regards to my abilities and talents needs a bit more work.

College vs High School

Being in High school for four years, I can honestly say that I haven't noticed many differences between my college experience so far and my high school experience. Probably because i don't live on campus? There isn't a difference between the amount of work from college and high school. I took honors and AP courses during my high school stint and i had much work. There isn't a noticeable difference in syllabi as well. A big difference i have noticed though are the assignments. My professors haven't given me a lot of written work but a lot of reading work. I've been reading a lot since my first day in college. College is also a bit more spacial then high school. I come from a very crowded high school and having a lot of room and space is a good thing. Actually, one of the biggest differences between high school and college is freedom. College Freedom > High school Freedom.

Ooey: How does he read?

Reading isn't my thing but when i do read i try to read in an extremely quiet environment. I also try to stay alone when i read something I'm interested in. I hate having distractions because i stay on the same page and on the same sentence for 10 minutes and i can never concentrate. I tend to read at night because that's the only time of the day that i can read. I also tend to read in my bedroom. I don't really have any special techniques to help me read. I just read the book and that's it. If I'm in the mood to read a book and the book is interesting I'll read and I'll probably finish it in less than a day or two.

Stockton College: What do i expect from this place?

Stockton College. What i expect from this college and probably any other college is a degree. A degree to aid me in getting a job and to help me make a living. I didn't really expect anything else from Stockton because i didn't really want to go here. My first choice was Rutgers but i felt extremely bad for my parents because they didn't have much money for me to go there. My parents and myself would have to take out loans and i knew that it would have caused a burden on my family. Although Stockton wasn't my first choice I'm trying to make the best of it. I'm expecting to meet new people at Stockton and expecting to get some sort of degree to help me in life. Probably everyone expects this from every college but it's kind of hard to expect things from a place that you didn't want to be in or a place you didn't want to go to.
